The first idea and start of studies, concerning construction of a bridge in this area, were revealed in 1880, when studies for building of a railway bridge were elaborated, for achieving a direct railway connection between Bucharest and Constanza. The same for a railway–highway bridge can be dated to 1915. These ideas and studies were resumed later, namely in 1937, 1942–44, 1959–61 and finally in 1966.
